Driving Directions to the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center

From Twin Cities:

Follow I-35N to Duluth. Take right exit onto WI HWY 2, you will go over the St. Louis Bay via the Richard I. Bong Bridge. Stay on HWY 2 through downtown Superior (HWY 2 turns into Belknap Street). Belknap/US HWY 2 will intersect with HWY 53. The Veterans Historical Center is located at that intersection.

From Eau Claire:

Follow H-53N to Superior. The center is located at the intersection of HWY 2 & 53 and Belknap Street just past the entrance to Barker’s Island.

From the Range Cities:

Follow USH-53 S to Duluth. Continue on 53 South over the Blatnik Bridge – Follow HWY 53 South to the intersection of HWY 2/HWY 53 and Belknap Street. The center is located at that intersection right on the harbor.

Directions to the Richard I. Bong State Historical Marker & Bong Gravesite Poplar, WI

From the Center: Follow HWY 53 South through Superior for about 7 miles. Just outside of town you will pass the WI State Tourist Information Center on your right. Up ahead on the left will be a large weigh station. Continue until the HWY 53 / HWY 2 split. Take the HWY 2 exit and follow for about 7 miles. You will come to the town of Poplar. The Wisconsin State Historical Marker is located on the frontage road that runs alongside Hwy 2 (this is Main Street) on the North Side of Highway 2. The P-38 now on display at the Heritage Center was originally displayed near the marker. Later, it was moved to Poplar High School a short distance away. The High School (now a privately-owned structure) once housed the original Bong Memorial Room which was maintained by the Bong Family. Dick Bong’s gravesite is located in the family plot of a small cemetery located a short distance south of HWY 2.
